TEFL IN ASIA
For a qualified EFL teacher, Asia offers a diverse range of teaching opportunities and experiences. There is a huge demand for native English speaking EFL teachers, so there is never a shortage of jobs, and salaries are amongst the highest in the industry. If you hold a degree (not specifically a teaching degree) and a TEFL certificate, you will find it incredibly easy to obtain a position in the country of your choice.
Some countries “overlook” the need for a degree, and focus more on a TEFL qualification, provided it is not an online qualification or from a course of less than 4 weeks duration. Salaries for EFL teachers vary from country to country, depending largely on the cost of living. However, no matter where you teach, you will always find a great variety of cultural experiences. Asia has something for everyone - from the hustle and bustle of the big cities, to the peace and tranquility of the rural areas. Teachers are held in high regard in Asia, and students are very respectful.
In some of the poorer countries and regions, paid EFL teaching employment is scarce and most teachers in those locations are there on voluntary placements. Basic accommodation and meals are sometimes provided.
Details of main EFL destinations within Asia are given below:
TEFL IN THAILAND
Average TEFL teacher salary: 25,000-55,000 Baht/mth
Main TEFL locations: Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui, Phuket, Hat Yai, Suratthani, Ayudhya
TEFL job opportunities:
Thailand is alive with EFL teaching opportunities and is without doubt one of the easiest places in Asia to find EFL teaching work. The demand for English remains extremely high. A degree is usually asked for, but in reality, there are many EFL positions available to anyone with an internationally recognised TEFL certificate.
Opportunities exist in a number of areas: government and private schools, universities, colleges, private language schools, international schools, businesses, the tourism industry. TOEFL, IELTS, GMAT, SAT and other such test-preparation classes are also very popular. Private tutoring is also in high demand, and can be a great income supplement to the EFL teacher.
Thai students are extremely motivated to learn, and hold teachers in high esteem. Their sense of fun makes teaching in Thailand a very satisfying and rewarding experience. The beauty and mystique of this country are the main reasons that it is now one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, and a focal point for EFL teachers.

TEFL IN CHINA
Average TEFL teacher salary: Vary enormously. RMB3,000-RMB8,500/mth
Main TEFL locations: Nationwide
TEFL job opportunities:
One of the largest and most densely-populated countries in the world, China is home to a variety of mysterious and influential cultures and exotic religions – all along with a colorful and engaging history. Its beauty and diversity make China a popular destination for EFL teachers. A country looking to the future but never forgetting its past, China is the perfect place for those looking to begin their English-teaching career.
Generally, teachers receiving visas through a school in China are not permitted to teach outside of that school. However, this is usually not a problem since the cost of living in China is very low. Thus, teachers in China should be able to live very comfortably on their salaries.
Most ESL/EFL teachers arrange jobs before arriving in China, normally by contacting recruitment agencies or individual employers. Positions in public colleges and universities are often pre-arranged by applying to Chinese embassies or consulates overseas, or to the International Employment Office in Beijing. It is also possible to apply to the provincial Education offices or directly to the institutes themselves (addressed to the Foreign Affairs Office, or Waiban). With China now engaged in huge levels of international trade, there is a great demand for Business English in the Chinese Commercial sector. Many companies are now setting up their own in-house English teaching programs, and recruit either from the ExPat community, or from overseas.

TEFL IN INDONESIA
Average TEFL teacher salary: 6,000,000-8,000,000 Rupiah/mth (in the big cities)
Main TEFL locations: Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Solo
TEFL job opportunities:
Indonesia is one of the most beautiful, fascinating and culturally absorbing nations in the world.
The world’s fifth most populous nation, it has been rapidly recovering from the political and economic instability that rocked the country at the end of the 1990s. The major language schools survived the crisis and continue to be staffed by foreign teachers.
The best teaching prospects in Indonesia are for those who have completed TEfL training and are willing to sign a 12- or 18-month contract. Most jobs are in Jakarta, though there are also schools in Surabaya, Bandung, Yogayakarta, and Solo (among others).
Visas are an issue whatever the nationality. Work permit regulations are rigidly adhered to in Indonesia, and all the established schools will apply for a visa permit on your behalf. English teachers must have English as their first language and be nationals of the U.S., Canada, Britain, Australia, or New Zealand. With more informal teaching positions it is necessary to leave the country every two months.

TEFL IN JAPAN
Average TEFL teacher salary: ¥220,000 - ¥320,000 per month
Main TEFL locations: Tokyo, Osaka
TEFL job opportunities:
The prospect of working in Japan attracts thousands of EFL teachers each year. The demand for English remains strong, although recession in the late 1990s resulted in the closure of some major companies when fewer Japanese people were willing to pay for expensive English lessons. Consequently, competition for teaching jobs has become more acute. Be prepared to spend a sizeable sum of money while conducting the job hunt because of the high cost of living in Japanese cities. Once established, the financial rewards can be considerable.
There are several different options open to people looking for a teaching job:eikaiwa schools, the JET program and private primary, secondary and third-level schools. Once you've got yourself established with a job and a valid visa status, there is also the possibility of teaching lessons privately.
The most common means of recruitment after the internet is by advertising in English language newspapers. A university degree is a requirement in order to obtain a work permit to teach.

TEFL IN SOUTH KOREA
Average TEFL teacher salary: 1.8 - 2.5 million Won/mth
Main TEFL locations: Seoul, Pusan
TEFL job opportunities:
South Korea now rivals Japan as one of the busiest EFL teaching destinations in Asia. With an estimated 100,000 institutes offering English lessons of some sort, the demand for native-speaking English teachers is huge. EFL teachers should be careful about accepting the first Korean job offer that comes their way. While Korea boasts some of the most attractive EFL teaching positions anywhere in the world, it is gaining a reputation for some of the worst. Most teaching opportunities exist in Private Language Institutes (Hakwons), and conditions, contracts and salaries vary enormously between employers. The number of Hakwons that close within a few weeks of opening is alarming, as is the number of teachers leaving Korea with stories of contract and pay hassles. A degree and a TEFL certificate are required.
EFL teaching opportunities can also be found in corporate in-house language programs, universities, public relations and advertising companies, and of course, private tutoring.
Korea is a fascinating country in which to spend a year or two teaching English. And while most teachers experience serious culture-shock on arrival, they generally return home with very positive memories.

TEFL IN TAIWAN
Average TEFL teacher salary: NT$40,000-NT$60,000/mth
Main TEFL locations: Taipei
TEFL job opportunities:
Until the early '90s, Taiwan was a place where just about anyone could find a well-paid EFL teaching job. Private language schools (or 'Buhsibans'), which cram students for university entrance, were on every Taipei street corner. The situation changed when a combination of new government legislation on teachers working illegally, regional economic factors, and the devastating earthquake of October 1999 contrived to dampen the market for English, putting many Buhsibans out of business. But there is still a significant demand for native-speaking EFL teachers in Taiwan, with many of the EFL positions involving teaching younger learners. Most Taiwanese employers prefer to recruit locally, and few advertise overseas. The majority require teachers to have at least some kind of TEFL qualification.
Taiwan might not have quite the allure for teachers it used to, but it remains a fascinating and rewarding place to spend time teaching English.

TEFL IN SINGAPORE
Average TEFL teacher salary: S$2500-S$5000/mth
Main TEFL locations: Statewide
TEFL job opportunities:
Teaching EFL in Singapore is comparable to teaching EFL in other Asian countries like Taiwan and Korea, with the exception that it is not as lucrative. Teaching positions are available in both private and government schools. The difference between Singapore and other Asian countries is that Singapore is supposedly an English speaking country. Singlish (Singaporean English) is widely spoken, but is so grammatically different to International English, that it may as well be a separate language. Many students in private language schools attend classes not to learn English, but to learn correct grammar and improve their pronunciation. International schools pay well, but only hire qualified and experienced teachers. A degree and a TEFL certificate are required.
The cost of living in Singapore is quite high, so it's not a place where EFL teachers can save money.

TEFL IN MALAYSIA
Average TEFL teacher salary: R2,000 - R4,000/mth
Main TEFL locations: Kuala Lumpur, Penang
TEFL job opportunities:
Malaysia has a well-established and generally high-quality TEFL market, which provides good pay rates and conditions for teachers who manage to secure work there. Unfortunately, tight work visa regulations have made it difficult for EFL teachers who do not hold an MA to find work in Malaysia. English is taught as a second language in all Primary and Secondary schools (often as early as Year 1) so many Malaysian teenagers and young adults have a relatively good command of the language. A lot of the EFL teaching is only part-time, which normally means teachers have to supplement their income with private lessons. These are easy to find, as there are plenty of Malaysians who dream of studying at university in the US, Australia or the UK.

TEFL IN VIETNAM
Average TEFL teacher salary: US$15-$25/hr, in a good school or university (normally requiring teachers to have an internationally recognized TEFL qualification and a degree).
NB: Salaries may be significantly lower outside HCMC and Hanoi.
Main TEFL locations: Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi
TEFL job opportunities:
Vietnam is one of the hidden jewels of the EFL teaching world. English language learning, like tourism, has been late coming to Vietnam, but spurred on by the needs of its rapidly growing tourism industry, and by the possibilities of international trade in the region, the demand for English has never been greater. EFL teaching positions can be obtained quite easily for anyone with a TEFL certificate, however more recently, degrees are becoming necessary for a visa. Obtaining a visa can be a frustrating process. Most EFL teachers arrive on a tourist visa, then once a teaching position has been obtained, the school sponsors the teacher in order to obtain a working visa.
Most of the EFL teaching jobs are in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi, in language schools, teaching students of all ages. There is also work in universities, but the pay is generally lower than in language schools. Your money goes a long way in Vietnam, so EFL teachers find that they can easily save money and enjoy the lifestyle.

TEFL IN LAOS
Average TEFL teacher salary: US$10-US$13/hr
Main TEFL locations: Vientiane, Luang Prabang
TEFL job opportunities:
Laos' country-feel is very friendly and accommodating. The people are warm and hospitable and life here is very comfortable.
In the past few years many language institutes have popped up Vientiane, and to a lesser extent, Luang Prabang. These schools generally pay well, on a per hour basis, but it is difficult to get full time work. They also don't supply housing, and sometimes don't supply a work visa.
Another option is to work at one of the bilingual schools (there are quite a few), and the pay ranges from US$600-US$1000/mth. The lower paying jobs usually provide free housing and a work visa is provided by all.
There are many EFL teachers volunteering in the more rural areas of the country, where paid EFL positions are rare. The experience alone is more than enough reward.
TEFL IN CAMBODIA
Average TEFL teacher salary: US$7-US$12/hr
Main TEFL locations: Phnom Penh
TEFL job opportunities:
EFL teaching opportunities in Cambodia are similar to that of Laos. Language institutes and universities in Phnom Penh are the main sources of EFL teaching jobs. A TEFL certificate and a degree are requirements. A teaching certificate is highly recommended, though not required. Very few contracts exist. Schools rarely recruit online, and most interviews are conducted in person.
Again, many EFL teachers choose to volunteer in the poorer regions.

TEFL IN HONG KONG
Average TEFL teacher salary: Private Sector: HK$20,000-$50,000/mth. State Sector: HK$205,000-$557,000/yr (+ HK$13,000 special allowance). Freelance Teachers can earn: HK$200-$600/hr.
Main TEFL locations: Hong Kong
TEFL job opportunities:
Hong Kong offers some of the best paid EFL teaching jobs in the world. But the island's frenetic pace and 24/7 timetable is not for the faint-hearted. Learning English, more than ever, is on everyone's agenda. There is even a move to eliminate Cantonese and to establish English and Putonghua (modern Standard Chinese) as the only two languages of instruction in the Hong Kong Education system.
Opportunities for EFL teachers abound in English language schools, English-medium schools and universities. The British Council in Hong Kong employs a significant number of TEFL-certified teachers on its summer programs. The Hong Kong Government's Native-speaking English Teacher (NET) scheme is another source of well-paid EFL teaching work for teachers interested in working for 2 years in one of the island's Public Secondary Schools. The 'Enhanced NET Scheme', in operation since 1988/9, annually undertakes to place one native-speaking English teacher in every Public Sector Secondary school with fewer than 40 classes, and two teachers in every Secondary School with more than 40 classes. The Government has also recently decided to employ 400 native-speaking English teachers in the island's Primary school sector. There are very few opportunities for EFL teachers who do not have at least 2 years' teaching experience and an internationally recognized TEFL Certificate. Many institutions now stipulate that applicants must have a TEFL Diploma or a higher level qualification such as an MA TEFL.

TEFL IN NEPAL
Average TEFL teacher salary: Low, unless employed by British Council or language schools.
Main TEFL locations: Kathmandu,
Patan, Bhakatpur
TEFL job opportunities:
Nepal may not be the most obvious place for an EFL job search, but you'd be surprised. There are quite a few opportunities for EFL teachers with an open mind and an interest in the rich cultural experience this country has to offer. There is a significant demand for teachers who have experience teaching younger learners, with numerous positions, many of them voluntary, in State and Private school sectors.
Volunteer placement organizations such as the Peace Corps, the Fulbright Commission and the Voluntary Services Organization (VSO) are very active out here, and the British Council has a teaching operation in Kathmandu. The natural beauty of the surrounding landscape, the jostling crowds, the bullock carts and the noisy street markets are more than enough to render a teaching stint in Nepal one of the most memorable of your career - not to mention the delightful Nepalese students.

TEFL IN INDIA
Average TEFL teacher salary: 10,000–13,000 rupees/mth
Main TEFL locations: Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore TEFL job opportunities:
India is the third largest English speaking country in the world and the language is quickly becoming essential to the business community. Demand for TEFL teachers is therefore becoming relatively high, but the market can be competitive. There are quite a few language schools opening up in the major cities, and EFL teaching opportunities abound within the business sector.
India's sprawling cities offer a unique and unforgettable experience to TEFL teachers, one that you'll never forget.

TEFL IN AFRICA
The EFL teaching situation in most parts of Africa is minimal. Many ex-colonies of Britain use English as the medium of instruction in state schools and so most teachers are locals. In North Africa, most TEFL jobs are in Egypt and Morocco, although you sometimes also see jobs in available in Tunisia. In both Egypt and Morocco, the only jobs worth considering are with universities or with American and British language schools. In Egypt, there are good schools in Cairo and Alexandria, while in Morocco there are schools in most major cities. Most jobs allow a comfortable lifestyle but no real savings.
In Sub-Saharan Africa, it is extremely difficult to find TEFL jobs. Very experienced and qualified EFL teachers may be able to find jobs in US language institutes. For other teachers, the only jobs worth considering are those arranged through aid organizations/programs.
TEFL and degree qualifications are pre-requisites for teaching at the university level; requirements for teaching experience depend on the particular institution or country. The demand is high for instructors who are qualified to teach English for academic purposes and technical and business English, as well as for specialists in curriculum design, teacher training, material development, and administration. Salaries are modest and vary according to the type of teaching institution.
There is some work available in South Africa, but as many of their citizens speak English as a native language, opportunities for non-South Africans are somewhat limited.
Some opportunities exist in almost all countries, but the only African nations where there is any significant scope for working in private language schools, or institutes, are detailed below:
TEFL IN EGYPT
Average TEFL teacher salary: US$5-US$15/hr
Main TEFL locations: Cairo, Alexandria, Heliopolis, Maadi, Zamalek
TEFL job opportunities:
As an EFL teaching destination, Egypt has a lot to offer. Historically and archeologically, it has few equals. From an EFL teaching perspective, it represents some of the best paid teaching positions in North Africa - particularly in the Sinai Desert. Big cities such as Cairo and Alexandria also offer plenty of job opportunities for the EFL teacher. Most institutions require an internationally recognized TEFL Certificate, and teachers who have taught Business English or younger learners should have no problem finding work.
The British Council has offices in Cairo and Alexandria, and other reputable institutions such as International House and the American University are also present out here.
In prosperous residential areas like Heliopolis, Maadi, and Zamalek anyone who can cultivate contacts can set up private lessons.
There are far fewer restrictions for women in Egypt than in many of the other Muslim countries of North Africa and the Middle East, which makes this land of the Pharaohs, the Pyramids and the Sphinx a viable proposition for any EFL teacher looking for an exotic teaching assignment in an unforgettable place.

TEFL IN KENYA
Average TEFL teacher salary: KS450-KS500/hr
Main TEFL locations: Nairobi
TEFL job opportunities:
By far, the majority of EFL opportunities in Kenya are through volunteer placement schemes, where a "local" salary may be provided. Some higher paying EFL jobs can be found in the limited language schools, and government schools and institutes. Salaries are quite low compared to other countries, but are sufficient to lead a comfortable life.
Many EFL teachers working in Kenya see it as more of a life experience and an opportunity to help in the poor regions of the country, rather than an opportunity to make money.

TEFL IN MOROCCO
Average TEFL teacher salary: 9,000-11,000 dirham/mth
Main TEFL locations: Rabat, Tangier, Agadir, Casablanca, Fez
TEFL job opportunities: The first language in Morocco is Arabic, but French is also used. In recent times however, English has gained in popularity, especially when it comes to business. There are dozens of private English schools that hire Native English teachers in all the major cities in Morocco, meaning there is a good choice for interested EFL Teachers.
Morocco is a popular destination for tourists, although their have been some views by teachers teaching at the private language schools, that you need to be careful with money (wages) and make sure you have the proper visas and contract in place. If you are prepared and have your street smarts, none of this should be a problem at all, and you can enjoy teaching English in an exotically beaufitul and freindly country. Moroccan English schools require TEFL/TESOL qualifications.

TEFL IN TUNISIA
Average TEFL teacher salary: 15-20 dinars/hr
Main TEFL locations: Tunis + tourist destinations
TEFL job opportunities:
Similar to its neighbour Morocco, Tunisia does not consider English as its second language. However, many Tunisians are starting to learn English for study and work purposes, and as a result there is a reasonably good demand for EFL teachers, particularly in the capital and areas with a high level of employment in the tourism industry. Opportunities also exist within the business sector.

TEFL IN WESTERN EUROPE
Historically viewed as the hub of the developed world, Western Europe holds a great many attractions for prospective EFL teachers with an interest in European art, history, architecture and culture.
The countries of Western Europe, and in particular those with a Latin influence, remain some of the most popular destinations for qualified EFL teachers, and competition for places in Spain and Italy is fierce.
Work is almost always in private language academies. Pay and benefits
in Germany, Spain and Italy
are often the best in Western Europe. Between 10 to 15 Euros an hour is the average rate of pay. However, 25 Euros or more is not unheard of, especially after a few years experience. Germany is a highly urbanized country with language academies in just about every city and town. Spain and Italy may not match Germany in pay and benefits, but the quality of life is great and the amount of sunshine can’t be beaten! In Italy, hourly wages may range from 8 to 12 Euros an hour. Depending on the TEFL market in the city or town where you are, EFL teachers may charge between 14 and 18 Euros an hour for private lessons. Private teachers in places like Rome tend to charge more.
With the advent of the new EU Labour Law, it is difficult for EFL teachers who do not hold an EU passport to find EFL teaching positions. However, non-EU citizens can still theoretically apply to work in the EU. After they have accepted a job offer, it is then the employer's responsibility to apply for the necessary work permit and residence visa that will allow non-EU EFL teachers to reside and work legally in Western Europe. But in reality though, a lot of European employers would rather avoid the expense of hiring non-EU EFL teachers when they can hire fellow EU citizens from the UK or Ireland without having to worry about applying for work permits and residence visas for them.
Details of major EFL destinations within Western Europe are given below:
TEFL IN AUSTRIA
Average TEFL teacher salary: 18-20 euros/hr
Main TEFL locations: Vienna
TEFL job opportunities:
Austria, situated in the centre of Europe, can be a great place to teach English. Most EFL teaching is done on a freelance basis, teaching in the business sector in Vienna (where the cost of living is quite high).
Native speakers with a TEFL qualification can often find work giving private English lessons, and at adult education institutes (Volkhochschulen). You will find these listed in the local telephone book or by visiting the website of the Verband Österreichischer Volkshochschulen, association of Austrian adult education institutes. A list of private language schools is available on the website of the British Council Austria.

TEFL IN BELGIUM
Average TEFL teacher salary: 18-38 EUR/hr (depending on qualifications & experience)
Main TEFL locations: Brussels and other major cities
TEFL job opportunities:
If you are looking at teaching in Europe, Belgium could be the place for you. With the European commission, EU Parliment and associated organisations, and many MN companies located in Brussels, the capital of Belgium, it is a mixing pot of different nationalities with a strong multi-national feel to it.
As a result there are many jobs available for EFL teachers, including language schools, teaching private lessons or teaching at government schools and universities (the latter 2 require a Masters degree and experience).
Daily living expenses are reasonably low, making Belgium a good option for teaching English.
TEFL IN FRANCE
Average TEFL teacher salary: Vary enormously. Contract teachers can expect a net salary of EUR1,400-EUR1,800/mth Freelance teachers should not be working for less than EUR15-18/hr.
Main TEFL locations: Paris and major cities
TEFL job opportunities:
France, in general - and Paris, in particular - has long been an obvious choice for EFL teachers looking for overseas teaching experience in a country with seemingly everything to offer. In reality, the supply of work has not always been able to keep up with the demand among the thousands of EFL teachers who head for France every year seeking work. But the last few years have seen a reversal of this trend, with many English language schools now experiencing critical shortages of teachers.
By law, French companies are required to spend 1% of their salary budget on vocational training for their employees. English lessons are an obvious choice for many companies, particularly with France being such a key player in the European Union. The need for Business English is particularly apparent, with many language schools specializing in this area. 'Telephone lessons' are very popular among French businessmen and women, who may not have time in their busy schedules for a 2-hour face-to-face lesson, but can generally squeeze in a 30-minute cours par téléphone a couple of times a week with a native English teacher. Teachers with Business English experience and knowledge of French will have the pick of the jobs. More and more English language schools are stipulating that teachers have an internationally recognized TEFL Certificate. Along with the hundreds of private language schools in Paris, English lessons are frequently organized through the municipal City Halls and through the Chamber of Commerce in most French towns.
Teachers who do not hold an EU passport may have trouble finding work legally in France.

TEFL IN GERMANY
Average TEFL teacher salary: EUR11-30/hr
Main TEFL locations: Berlin and other major cities
TEFL job opportunities:
For EFL teachers who do not hold an EU Passport, Germany offers some of the best prospects for working legally in continental Europe.
As the driving force behind the European Union, Germans have a very real need to learn English - which the German government addresses well. The high quality of education in the State system has meant that few young adult Germans possess less than a working knowledge of English. Government incentives also exist for Private companies to offer 'training holidays' for their employees. These training courses frequently mean intensive English lessons.
Most German institutions will not employ EFL teachers who do not to have an internationally recognized TEFL certificate. Commercial/Business experience and a working knowledge of German will greatly help your chances of securing work.
Invariably, EFL teachers in Germany end up working on a freelance basis for 2 or 3 different schools.

TEFL IN GREECE
Average TEFL teacher salary: EUR450-EUR750/mth
Main TEFL locations: All large cities
TEFL job opportunities:
There are over ten thousand English schools in Greece, and a large percentage of these employ TEFL teachers from the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, Australia or South Africa. Most of the EFL students at English schools are children, attending English lessons in the afternoon after their regular school. There are also numerous opportunities to teach adults, as there is a strong demand in Greece for ESP (English for Special Purposes), particularly Business English, English for Academic Purposes and English for Tourism.
In order to be registered as a teacher with the Greek Ministry of Education, you need a university degree. Schools are sometimes willing to overlook this, as they're more interested in interpersonal skills and teaching ability. The Ministry doesn't insist on a TEFL certificate for graduates, but most schools require that you have one.
TEFL IN ITALY
Average TEFL teacher salary: EUR650-EUR1300/mth
Main TEFL locations: All cities
TEFL job opportunities:
Italy - like France - is an obvious choice for many EFL teachers looking for work in Europe. Italy's popularity as a teaching destination has meant that finding EFL work is not always as easy as might have been hoped. An internationally recognized TEFL Certificate is a minimum requirement; the ability to speak Italian will also boost your chances of finding work considerably.
Teachers are generally employed as 'Contract workers' or 'Freelance workers'. Italy's corporate legislation on Social Security payments has made it more attractive for Private Language schools to take on freelance teachers, as teachers who fall into this category must make their own Social Security payments. But many schools do employ teachers on contracts, and a significant number of contracts are given out each year to native English language teachers in the State Primary and Secondary schools. Under the Italian Government's Lingue 2000 initiative, Secondary-age students wishing to take government-recognized international exams (in particular the Trinity EFL exams) can have the exams accepted as credits for high school graduation. This has seen a boom in the demand for this kind of EFL exam, and for EFL teachers to teach them.

TEFL IN PORTUGAL
Average TEFL teacher salary: Esc120,000-250,000/mth
Main TEFL locations: All large cities
TEFL job opportunities:
Portugal is an often overlooked corner of Europe for EFL teachers. This is surprising, given the opportunities which exist here for teachers with an internationally recognized TEFL certificate (and the right visa). Those teaching in Portugal agree that it's a very pleasant place to work, with good salaries in relation to the cost of living.
The general level of English tuition in Portuguese State schools is very high, with many students graduating with the Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE). There is a clear preference for British English, though teachersfrom other English-speaking countries are rarely overlooked.
Private English schools can be found throughout the country, even in small coastal towns such as Póvoa and Averio. In the bigger cities, international language school chains International House, inlingua, and the Wall Street Institute have a significant presence. Most of these schools recruit many of their teachers from overseas.

TEFL IN SCANDINAVIA
Average TEFL teacher salary: Mixed but quite high
Main TEFL locations: Capital cities
TEFL job opportunities:
Due to the high standard of English in all Scandinavian countries, EFL teaching opportunities in this part of theworld are limited. There are quite a few language schools in Finland, however, who hire native speakers. Salaries are reasonably good, but the cost of living is high.

TEFL IN SPAIN
Average TEFL teacher salary: 1,000 euros/mth
Main TEFL locations: Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville
TEFL job opportunities:
Spain has always been one of the busiest TEFL markets in Europe, with literally thousands of EFL teachers heading there each year.
The rush for English started with the lead up to the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. And it has hardly slowed since. Madrid and Barcelona continue to be the most popular destinations, though every other back street in every Spanish city has an 'Academia de ingles'.
The British Council has operations in Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao and Valencia, while language school chains such as International House, inlingua and Linguarama can be found right across the country.
Most recruitment is done locally, and most institutions require teachers to have a TEFL certificate as a minimum qualification. Opportunities exist in the Commercial sector and also in the rapidly growing market for teaching English to Younger Learners. The Cambridge main suite of EFL exams - in particular PET, FCE and CAE - are very popular out here, as is Business English.
Teaching EFL in Spain can take teachers a while to adjust to: long hours and split shifts (early morning + early evening) are the norm. But in general, the culture, the people, the nightlife and all the other positives of living and working in Spain far outweigh the negatives.

TEFL IN EASTERN EUROPE
Although our view of Eastern Europe may be coloured by the images of the Cold War, the area today is revealed as a region of unrivalled beauty and unmatched local hospitality and warmth.
Once seen as something of an ordeal by many EFL teachers, the overwhelmingly positive experiences of those adventurous teachers who have lived and worked in Eastern Europe is helping to attract more and more people to this area.
As business contact with the West continues to develop, and the need for qualified EFL teachers increases, contracts in Eastern Europe are now matching many of those in Western Europe for teachers as well as providing a stimulating and exciting cultural backdrop.
Details of major EFL destinations within Eastern Europe are given below:
TEFL IN BULGARIA
Average TEFL teacher salary: EUR500-950/mth
Main TEFL locations: Sofia
TEFL job opportunities:
Opportunities for teaching EFL in Bulgaria are rapidly improving. People, companies and kids are wanting to learn English, due to so many British people buying properties there over the past few years. It is not possible to teach the state curriculum without a degree of some kind, even if it is not teaching related, so the only other option is private language schools.

TEFL IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC
Average TEFL teacher salary: 16,000-24,000kc/mth (less in the State sector)
Main TEFL locations: Prague, Brno, Pilsen
TEFL job opportunities:
In the past few years, the Czech Republic has risen to the top of many EFL teachers' lists of possible teaching destinations. The emergence of Prague as one of Europe's most popular tourist destinations is partly responsible. So, too, is the growing demand for native-speaking English teachers. Since the fall of Communism in the Eastern Bloc, the Czechs, like most of their former Eastern Bloc cousins, have woken up to the fact that if they want to be part of the European Club they have to speak the lingua franca.
Private English language schools - both foreign and locally-owned - are sprouting up everywhere, particularly in Prague. Some EFL teachers now complain that the sheer number of English teachers looking for work in the capital has pushed down salaries and pushed up rents. A lot of these teachers are fleeing to the provinces, and to the quieter cities of Pilsen and Brno. Many schools only offer part-time contracts. This has meant that teachers often need to supplement their income with private lessons (which are fortunately easy to find). Czech Secondary schools have now started recruiting qualified EFL teachers for one-year appointments, often with subsidized/cheap accommodation thrown in. Few schools state a preference for British or American English, though most require a university degree and a 4-week TEFL Certificate course as minimum qualifications.

TEFL IN HUNGARY
Average TEFL teacher salary: 2,000-3,000 Forints/hr
Main TEFL locations: Budapest
TEFL job opportunities: It is definitely possible to earn enough as an EFL teacher to live well while in Hungary and have plenty left over for travel. If you stay away from Budapest! The cost of living is significantly higher there, and the EFL teaching market is more competitive.
In the smaller towns, there are countless language schools and private students searching for native speaker teachers, so job opportunities abound. Try to get into the public school system or a reputable private language school. This will provide a guaranteed income when other sources might fall by the wayside (students cancel, language school closes, etc.), and they often sort out work visas and residency permits. Also, many public schools provide housing.
In private schools, salaries are usually better than in state schools. Much of the work is shift work. You may have lessons in the morning, then in the late afternoon and in the evening.

TEFL IN POLAND
Average TEFL teacher salary: 600-800 Zlotys/mth (State Sector); 1,000-2,000 Zlotys/mth (Private Sector)
Main TEFL locations: Warsaw, Wroclaw, Krakow
TEFL job opportunities:
Poland has arguably the largest TEFL market in Europe, with a multitude of possibilities in both the State and Private Sectors for teachers of all levels. Since the collapse of Communism in 1990, the demand for English has skyrocketed. The old State exam in English for Polish secondary school students has been replaced by the Cambridge First Certificate (FCE) exam. This has created a huge need in the State sector for TEFL-certified English teachers.
Hundreds of language schools, particularly in Warsaw, dominate the Private sector, and offer Business English, General English and Cambridge FCE/CAE courses. A small group of the more reputable private language schools belong to the Polish Association for Standards in English (PASE), which promotes ethical practices among its members. Although conditions vary enormously between schools in Poland, the overall level of professional development for teachers (workshops, seminars and developmental observations) is very high, particularly by international standards. Newly-qualified TEFL teachers take note: Poland is a great place to cut your teeth.

TEFL IN ROMANIA
Average TEFL teacher salary: Low
Main TEFL locations: Bucharest, Timisoara
TEFL job opportunities:
Opportunities for EFL teaching in Romania are limited, due to schools being unable to afford to hire native speaking EFL teachers. There are a large number of private language schools opening up now, especially in Bucharest, where EFL teachers with an internationally recognised TEFL certificate should be able to obtain work.

TEFL IN ESTONIA
Average TEFL teacher salary: Low
Main TEFL locations: Larger cities
TEFL job opportunities:
Tucked away in the North of Europe, the Baltic state of Estonia offers significant opportunities for EFL teachers looking for a European teaching destination off the regular TEFL trail.
Since Estonia declared independence from Russia in 1991, it has been keen to forge closer ties with Europe. Its recent entry into the European Union has finally cemented these ties; the need for its 1.5 million people to learn English has never been more apparent. There is an increasing number of EFL teachers working in Estonia's 30-or-so universities and private schools, though most institutions now require all English language teachers to hold an internationally recognized TEFL certificate. The British Council has an office in Tallinn and acts as a testing centre for the UCLES main suite of EFL exams (KET, PET, FCE, CAE, CPE), and for the IELTS exam. Otherwise, there is still a distinct lack of international school chains in Estonia. But they will come; and with them, greater opportunities for EFL teachers.

TEFL IN UKRAINE
Average TEFL teacher salary: US$350-$1200/mth (+extras such as return flights and accommodation).
NB: Salaries are commensurate with qualifications and TEFL experience.
Main TEFL locations: Kiev, Odessa
TEFL job opportunities:
English is booming in the Ukraine. Seemingly everyone wants a piece of the action, and many Private English language schools are reporting student wait-lists for a place on their courses. Native-speaking English teachers are a scarce resource out here, and anyone with an internationally recognized TEFL certificate will have a good chance of finding work. Most recruitment for EFL teachers is done from overseas, often through organizations like International House, the British Council and the American Academy of Foreign Languages, all of whom have operations in the Ukraine. Opportunities exist in a number of different areas - even in training Ukrainian teachers to teach English. Business English is popular, as are the Cambridge PET/FCE/CAE exams. There are also many employment possibilities for anyone with experience teaching English to Younger Learners.

TEFL IN SLOVAKIA
Average TEFL teacher salary: US$280-$400/mth
Main TEFL locations: Bratislava, Kosice, Banska Bystrica
TEFL job opportunities:
The Slovak Republic has often been overlooked as a teaching destination in favour of the neighbouring Czech Republic. However, Slovakia is in its own right a promising destination for EFL teachers. Opportunities exist predominantly in private language schools, of which there are many in the larger cities.
TEFL IN RUSSIA
Average TEFL teacher salary: US$500-$800/mth
NB: Teachers should ensure that their salaries are paid in US dollars, even if
the salary stated on their contract is in Roubles.
Main TEFL locations: Moscow, St Petersburg
TEFL job opportunities:
The demand for EFL teachers in Russia remains strong, despite the harsh economic conditions under which much of the country has been living over the past decade. The presence of major language school chains such as International House and Linguarama has provided real opportunities for TEFL-certified English teachers. There are estimated to be almost 200 language schools in Moscow alone, most of which employ foreign teachers with the right profile (and/or qualifications). Along with General English, the demand for Business English has seen a sharp increase in the past few years, and anyone with experience in this area should have little difficulty finding work. The Cambridge First Certificate (FCE) exam is also very popular in Russia, and is taken by a significant number of Secondary school students each year.
Conditions vary enormously between schools, and teachers would be well advised to do sufficient research before accepting a teaching position. Visas and residence permits are generally tied to one specific employer, which can make it very difficult to switch jobs mid-contract.

TEFL IN THE MIDDLE EAST
Most teachers know that you can earn a very high salary teaching in the Middle East, however this region is not the most popular for newly qualified EFL teachers, as the competition is fierce, and due to the high salaries, employers tend to attract the most qualified EFL teachers. Turkey is one exception, however, where many newly qualified EFL teachers are able to find good employment.
Strict conditions and the lifestyle found in some of the oil-rich nations may not appeal to all - especially females.
English is already the international language of science, technology, and business, and is fast becoming the international language in many other fields as well. Middle Eastern countries are behind the rest of the world in English language proficiency, and there is a shortage of native English-speaking teachers in schools.
Details of major EFL destinations within the Middle East are given below:
TEFL IN BAHRAIN
Average TEFL teacher salary: BD520-BD580 - for teachers with a TEFL Certificate, BD580-BD700 - for teachers with a Diploma or MA TESOL
Main TEFL locations: Nationwide
TEFL job opportunities:
Bahrain is not a place for unqualified EFL teachers hoping to pick up a well-paid casual job. Oil wealth has meant that Bahrain and many of its neighbouring Gulf States can attract the best-qualified EFL teachers with extensive experience. Jobs are generally organized from outside Bahrain.
Bahrain is probably the most liberal of all the Gulf States: it tolerates women in the workplace (though the limitations for single women are well-documented) and it is one of the few places in the Middle East where alcohol is readily available. But it is also a very expensive country. EFL teachers expecting to come here to save a lot of money from a fat ex-pat salary should perhaps reconsider. This, in spite of the fact that EFL teachers pay no tax!
TEFL IN KUWAIT
Average TEFL teacher salary: US$30,000-US$45,000/annum
Main TEFL locations: Nationwide
TEFL job opportunities:
Kuwait offers many opportunities for EFL teachers and although salaries are not as lucrative as they once were, they are still higher than most countries. The market is especially good for teachers who have a few years’ experience. Employers here may provide airfare and housing as well as other benefits. There seem to be more opportunities and fewer restrictions on women teaching EFL in Kuwait, compared to some other Middle East countries.
TEFL IN OMAN
Average TEFL teacher salary: $20,000 per annum tax-free
Main TEFL locations: Muscat
TEFL job opportunities:
The education system in Oman has been undergoing dramatic changes over the past few years. A new education system has been established which is the Basic Education System in which, amongst other things, children learn English from first year (6 years of age). Prior to the new system the youngest age at which English was taught was 9 years of age.
The EFL market here is expanding, but it's not the place to go on a casual basis. Visa controls are tight. Univerisity qualifications, a TEFL certificate and several years' experience are essential to even be considered for EFL teaching positions here. Those who fit this category can find well-paying EFL positions without much effort.
TEFL IN SAUDI ARABIA
Average TEFL teacher salary: SR8,000 - SR10,000/mth
Main TEFL locations: Various
TEFL job opportunities:
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has always been seen as paying some of the highest EFL tax-free salaries in the world. Free airfares, accommodation, health care and education for dependent children are also typically thrown in. But things are perhaps not as rosy as they may seem. For one, the restrictions on female EFL teachers are still as rigid as ever - to the extent that it is almost impossible for an unattached female EFL teacher to find work within the Kingdom. (Most employers will only consider applications from women teachers if they are the other half of a married/defacto teaching couple.) For another, the events of September 11, the recent terrorist attacks on home soil, and the US-led invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, have made many of Saudi Arabia's resident EFL teachers nervous about staying on in this political and military hot-spot. The result is now a serious shortage of teachers.
Opportunities exist at different levels: Saudi schools and universities employ native English-speaking teachers to teach in their Language Departments; Military and Petrochemical institutions employ teachers for their in-house English language programs; and some Saudi families employ teachers to teach their children English at home. TEFL qualifications are essential, with many positions requiring a Masters or Diploma-level qualification.
Saudi Arabia was once a difficult place for EFL teachers to get into. Revised visa regulations and the House of Saud's realization that Saudis - like their oil-producing neighbours in the Gulf region - need to speak English, have combined to facilitate the work-search process in this enigmatic country. In fact, most teachers experience more difficulties obtaining the mandatory Exit Visa to get out than the Entry Visa to get in. Saudi Arabia may not be everyone's cup of tea, but EFL teachers in search of something off the beaten track should not overlook this oil-rich kingdom.

TEFL IN SYRIA
Average TEFL teacher salary: US$500/mth
Main TEFL locations: Damascus
TEFL job opportunities:
As Syria is not a wealthy country, salaries are considerably lower than those offered in oil rich countries. There are a limited number of opportunities for EFL teachers in the private language schools in Damascus. Teachers should arrange teaching positions and contracts before arrival.
TEFL IN TURKEY
Average TEFL teacher salary: US$800-$1,500/mth
NB: Since the devaluation of the Turkish Lira in Feb 2001, salaries have been
whittled away by rising inflation. Teachers should endeavour to find a job with
either a foreign-currency-linked salary, or a position which offers an
inflation-linked rise each month.
Main TEFL locations: Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir
TEFL job opportunities:
The boom in English language learning in Turkey stems back to the 1980s, when tourism suddenly took off and when, in 1987, it lodged its application to join the European Union. The fact that its application is still pending has done nothing to dampen the desire among Turkey's citizens to learn English.
Opportunities for university graduates with a TEFL Certificate exist in a number of different sectors. In Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir, private language schools (dershane) have sprung up everywhere, while private Secondary schools (lises) and universities such as Bilkent and Sabanci also take on a significant number of native-speaking EFL teachers each year. Full recognition of qualifications in these institutions is only (strictly-speaking) accorded to teachers who have a teaching qualification approved by the Department of Education in their own country.
There is a slight preference for British English in Turkey, attested to by the popularity of the Cambridge (KET,PET, FCE,CAE,CPE) exams, though any suitably qualified native English speaker should find work on arrival without too much trouble.

TEFL IN THE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
Average TEFL teacher salary: US$30,000-$50,000/yr
Main TEFL locations: Dubai, Abu Dhabi
TEFL job opportunities:
Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah - the most prominent 3 states in the United Arab Emirates - offer some lucrative opportunities for suitably qualified EFL teachers. Oil has brought significant wealth to the region; it has also increased the need for the UAE to learn English. Big salaries and excellent conditions have allowed UAE employers to be more selective about who they invite to teach them English, despite the fact that many institutions have recently been experiencing a chronic shortage of teachers. All positions require internationally-recognized TEFL qualifications; many ask for a TEFL-related diploma or MA.
Dubai and Abu Dhabi - perhaps best-known for their airport duty-free stores - are the most Westernized of the three Muslim states. Opportunities exist for both male and female teachers to teach General English and Business English, in Private Language Institutes, Scientific and Technological Institutes, Universities and State Primary and Secondary schools. Positions in military and petrochemical institutes are also frequently advertised.

TEFL IN LATIN AMERICA
The continent of South America, together with Central America, offers a wide range and variety of EFL teaching opportunities. The cultural diversity and Latin charm combine to make this region an attractive destination for EFL teachers. All of Latin America is a developing region. There is great inequality here among inhabitants. Some positions pay local rates which are not very high. Others pay very good rates, putting you in the top earning category in the region. Most positions fall somewhere in between.
Pay rates in Latin American countries are almost always in local currency, though some positions pay in dollars, pounds, or euros. Some positions are salaried with benefits. Most positions are hourly, and several schools offer travel stipends, housing allowances, and/or paid holidays, among other benefits.
In the big cities, the greatest demand for English comes from the business community. Because of the strong commercial links between the two American continents, the demand tends to be for American English. The whole continent is culturally and economically oriented towards the U.S.
Details of major EFL teaching destinations within Latin America are given below:
TEFL IN ARGENTINA
Average TEFL teacher salary: Pay is commensurate with a teacher's qualifications and experience. Many teachers are earning around US$1000 per month for contract work.
Main TEFL locations: Buenos Aires
TEFL job opportunities:
Over the past few years, Argentina has emerged as one of the largest markets in South America for EFL teaching work. Despite the political and economic crisis at the beginning of 2002, which has seen a return to financial instability and rising inflation, the number of English language schools, and therefore possibilities for EFL teaching work, is still significant. The need for English tends to be strongest in the Commercial sector, particularly in Buenos Aires, where literally thousands of companies provide English lessons for their employees. Teaching in this kind of environment is very often in-company and requires teachers to travel between teaching assignments. Business English is always in demand, as are IELTS, TOEFL and the Cambridge PET/FEC/CAE exams.
There are approximately 20 US Bi-National Centres in Argentina, all of which offer employment opportunities for suitably qualified EFL teachers. Large international chains of language schools such as the Wall Street Institute and Inlingua are also very present out here.
There is a slight preference for American-English, although opportunities exist for suitably qualified teachers from any native English-speaking background.

TEFL IN BOLIVIA
Average TEFL teacher salary: US$5-US$10/hr
Main TEFL locations: La Paz
TEFL job opportunities:
There are plenty of opportunities for EFL teaching in Bolivia. The majority of positions are of the volunteering nature and these can be enquired about in your home country. Volunteer positions involve the teaching of English and other skills in location out of La Paz in primary and secondary schools, and orphanages. Some paid EFL positions exist out of La Paz, but expect a local salary.
In the Capital La Paz, paid EFL teaching positions can be found at many of the language institutes or at universities.

TEFL IN BRAZIL
Average TEFL teacher salary: US$350-US$900.
Main TEFL locations: Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Florianopolis, Recife, Salvador de Baia
TEFL job opportunities:
As the largest country in South America, Brazil is big on business. Their geographical proximity to the United States, as well as their trade agreement with North America, makes speaking English a very important asset for Brazilian citizens. English is taught to all levels of Brazilian students, from childhood on up. Some Brazilian companies will hire EFL teachers to train their employees, to make foreign communication easier.
With that said, Brazil is naturally a major destination for those looking to teach EFL in a foreign country. Teaching English in Brazil is a unique and enriching experience that anyone who wishes to travel should consider.
The last few years have seen a number of large language school chains such as Cel-Lep, Alumini and Yazigi appear. Cultura Inglesa has over 50 schools across the country, and there are 22 US Bi-National Centers (Instituto Cultural Brazil-Estados Unidos) all of which employ EFL teachers. The British Council also has offices in five major cities. Private lessons are common, with the average hourly rate ranging from US$15-US$40.
Despite the financial and political turmoil of the past 20 years, things in Brazil seem to be settling down. The rampant inflation of the '80s and early '90s is now under control and, with the recent political and economic turmoil in Argentina, Brazil is suddenly looking more attractive than ever. The demand for English, and native-speaking English teachers, is here to stay.

TEFL IN CHILE
Average TEFL teacher salary: Minimum wage of US$400 (approx) p/month. Qualified teachers working in private language schools can expect to earn US$8-12 per hour.
Main TEFL locations: Santiago, Antofagasta, Arica, Punta Arenas, Concepcion, Iquique, Vina del Mar
TEFL job opportunities:
Chile is a popular destination for EFL teachers heading out to South America.
Santiago, the country's capital, today attracts significant levels of international investment. This investment, which includes that brought in through Chile's bi-lateral trade agreement with North America, has greatly increased the need for Chileans to speak English.
The number of private English language schools in Chile has risen dramatically in the past decade, particularly in the capital. The US Bi-National Centers (Instituto Chileno-Norteamericano) and the Instituto Chileno-Britanico de Cultura have schools in most of Chile's main cities and are good places to start any serious job search.
Despite these opportunities, competition for EFL teaching work is intense: the standard of Chile's own English teachers is very high, and native English-speaking EFL teachers would be well advised to arrive in Chile with an internationally recognized TEFL certificate and, ideally, a few years of experience to their name. Teachers with Business English, TOEFL or IELTS experience will have the best chances of finding work.

TEFL IN COLOMBIA
Average TEFL teacher salary: 800,000-140,000 pesos/mth
Main TEFL locations: Bogota, Medellin, Cali, Barranquilla, Cartagena
TEFL job opportunities:
Colombia, like Brazil, is renowned for its colourful culture, its soccer and the warmth of its people. But similarly to Brazil, it has also been scarred by high levels of crime, rampant inflation, and economic instability. This is a pity, because the demand for qualified EFL teachers in Colombia is huge. North American teachers are the most sought after, simply because of Colombia's orientation towards the USA; yet demand is such, particularly in cities such as Bogota, Barranquilla, Cali and Cartagena, that most EFL teachers can find work with relative ease. For MA/Phd-qualified teachers, opportunities exist in the State sector at the tertiary level. Teachers looking for a job in a 'respectable' private institution might approach the English-medium International schools. The 15-or-so US Bi-National Centres (Centro Colombo Americano), recruit dozens of EFL teachers each year, while the British Council also has centres in Bogota, Medellin and Cali.
In addition, the growing number of private language schools, many of them American-owned, take on TEFL-certified teachers looking for to teach General or Business English. Most EFL teachers who have taught in this country return home not with tales of crime, drugs and financial instability, but of delightful people passionate about their culture and fanatical about their soccer.

TEFL IN COSTA RICA
Average TEFL teacher salary: US$450-650/mth
Main TEFL locations: San José, Heredia, Alajuela, Cartago
TEFL job opportunities:
Costa Rica is a lush tropical country with kind and hospitable people. You can experience their own unique version of traditional Latino culture, dance to salsa music, and escape to tropical beaches.
In Costa Rica, the skill of speaking English is an excellent way to advance a career. As Costa Rica interacts more and more with the Western world in terms of business communication, knowing how to speak English is becoming a priority among businessmen and students alike, therefore many EFL teaching opportunities are available.
Few schools will hire you from overseas. However, many will hire you on the spot if you walk into their office, speak English, have a college degree (in anything), a TEFL certificate and an agreeable personality. Peek hiring season is from May to September.

TEFL IN ECUADOR
Average TEFL teacher salary: US$150-$400/mth
Main TEFL locations: Quito, Guayaquil, Cuenca
TEFL job opportunities:
Ecuador might not immediately spring to mind as place where opportunities abound for EFL teachers, but it should. This often overlooked corner of South America represents some of the best EFL teaching prospects in the region. A multitude of English language schools has sprung up in the past 15 years in Ecuador, particularly in Quito, the capital. Quality varies enormously, and not all employers stipulate that teachers must possess an internationally recognized TEFL Certificate (the preference often being for native English speakers rather than qualified teachers). There is a great demand for Business English and English for Younger Learners, so anyone with experience in these areas will have a greater chance of employment. PET, FCE and CAE exam preparation classes are also common.

TEFL IN GUATEMALA
Average TEFL teacher salary: US$10-18/hr
Main TEFL locations: Guatemala City, Antigua, Quetzaltenango
TEFL job opportunities:
Guatemala is a thriving TEFL market, and one which is often overlooked by EFL teachers looking for work in Latin America. Guatemala City offers certain teaching possibilities, though many teachers prefer to head for the picturesque towns of Antigua and Quetzaltenango, whose language schools and party feel attract more youthful crowd of teachers and students, particularly during the summer months. There is a clear preference for American-English out here, though native-English speakers from other countries also stand a good chance of finding work. The private English-medium schools dotted around the main cities are generally the best places to look for work.

TEFL IN MEXICO
Average TEFL teacher salary: US$350-$700/mth
Main TEFL locations: All large cities
TEFL job opportunities:
For all EFL teachers, particularly North Americans, Mexico offers some of the best opportunities for finding teaching work quickly. Since Mexico's inclusion in the North American Free Trade Agreement, the need for Mexicans to learn English has risen dramatically. Private language schools are now everywhere, and more and more companies are providing in-house English lessons for their employees.
The American Bi-National Centres (Instituto Mexicano-Norteamericano de Relaciones Culturales) have branches right across Mexico and employ hundreds of North Americans and other native-speaking English teachers every year.
Much of the recruitment takes place locally, with most teachers finding work once they have arrived in the country. TEFL qualifications are not required in all schools, though all of the more reputable institutions paying higher salaries and offering better conditions require a university degree and an internationally-recognized TEFL certificate.

TEFL IN PERU
Average TEFL teacher salary: US$350-$850/mth (in private schools)
Main TEFL locations: Lima
TEFL job opportunities:
Peru in general, and Lima in particular, has a bustling TEFL scene, with opportunities for both qualified and non-qualified teachers of English. There are are lot of traveller-teachers out here, many of whom pick up casual teaching work while on their way through South America. Employment opportunities for North American EFL teachers in particular exist in the nine American Bi-National centers (Instituto Cultural Peruano Norteamericano) dotted around the country. There are also many EFL teachers working in private language schools, in universities and in State Secondary schools.
The problems associated with securing a work visa for Peru are well documented, and tend to deter many teachers who might otherwise have been serious about an EFL career out here. Although they run the risk of harsh fines and/or deportation, many EFL teachers work in Peru on a tourist visa.

TEFL/TESL IN NORTH AMERICA
The USA's financial and commercial dominance of the international market place and the need for the rest of the world to communicate effectively with Americans, have rendered ESL big business over here. Tens of thousands of foreign students arrive in the USA each year to study English.
For ESL teachers, opportunities exist in two main sectors: teaching adults in the Private Sector (which includes language schools and universities), and teaching children in the state-owned public schools. State-funded English language programs for migrants also require qualified ESL teachers, and are organized in most American cities through churches, libraries and city halls.
There is a significant demand for English for Specific Purposes, and for exam preparation courses leading up to the TOEFL, TOEIC, GRE and GMAT, as well as the Michigan ECCE, ECPE and MELAB exams. Many foreign students also come to the USA on intensive summer programs to study General/Conversational English.
Although the demand for ESL teachers is enormous, it is extremely difficult for non-US citizens who do not have a 'green card' to get a working visa. Therefore the majority of positions are filled by local citizens, usually on a part-time basis. ESL teaching is not particularly well-paid in comparison to the cost of living and hourly rates of $15-$40 dollars are the norm.

TEFL/TESL IN AUSTRALIA
Australia continues to be one of the most attractive English-speaking destinations for ESL teachers and students. It is seen by students as a safe and affordable destination which offers a great climate, stunning scenery and friendly people. For teachers, it combines real ESL prospects with a highly desirable lifestyle. In addition, it has one of the best regulated TESOL industries in the world, divided into separate Private and State sectors.
The Private (ELICOS*) sector is dominated by almost 200 language schools. Many Australian universities also have their own ELICOS departments.
The State sector is split into two: English courses are run through the Adult Migrant Education Program (AMES) and the Department of Technical & Further Education (TAFE) colleges. These courses are aimed primarily at permanent Australian residents from non-English speaking backgrounds.
ESL teachers from overseas, particularly those from the UK, Ireland and Canada, usually secure work on arrival in Australia, though more and more Australian schools are recruiting over the Internet, particularly for the busy Sep-Dec intake.
The Australian ELICOS industry was hit hard by September 11 and is still reeling from the impact of the 2003 SARS scare. The country's most recent military engagements in Afghanistan and Iraq have arguably tarnished its reputation as an 'innocent' and safe place to study. In spite of this, the ELICOS industry looks set to continue on its path of steady growth for the foreseeable future.
Note: Teachers are paid according to qualifications and teaching experience.
Not all schools will recognize teaching experience outside of Australia. Australia is one of the few countries in the world where ESL teachers are normally paid for lesson preparation time. A$2400 -A$3200 (Net) per month.

TEFL/TESL IN THE UNITED KINGDOM
Since the 1950s, English Language teaching and learning has been big business in the UK. The British Council in particular has been very proactive in promoting the UK's image as a viable study destination for overseas students, and in its regulation of ESL providers and employers.
Despite competition from the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, the UK's popularity as a study destination has not waned. During the European holiday months of June to August, towns such as Oxford, Cambridge, Bournemouth and Edinburgh bristle with foreign language students. For teachers returning from positions overseas, and for newly-qualified teachers looking for their first appointment, opportunities abound during this summer period. While the emphasis is on General English, there are also openings for teachers with experience preparing students for the Cambridge (KET, PET, FCE, CAE, CPE) and IELTS exams.
Longer term employment prospects may be harder to come by, particularly for less experienced teachers, as many UK language schools will only consider people with higher level TESOL qualifications such as the Cambridge DELTA or Trinity Licentiate Diploma.
